Antique Ephemera Lein for Interest Due Legal Document
Here is an antique legal document dated 16 June 1830. It is a writ addressed to the Sheriff of Middlesex County, Connecticut, to summons a man whose name appears to be Jake Kilsey (the handwriting is a bit ambiguous). Kilsey had signed a promissory note for nine dollars and never repaid it. He is therefore being asked to pay a total of twenty dollars in damages and costs. This is a very good return on money invested! The order is signed by Justice of the Peace Loomis before whom the case will be heard (assuming Kilsey can be found). This large, for the time, legal document is custom framed for your enjoyment. Overall dimensions are 12 inches by 15 inches. The document itself is 7 ½ inches by 11 ½ inches. It is in excellent condition with no tears or chips. It has been folded (it is a legal document and was folded in a particular way so that the case title would appear on the top panel). The crease marks are, therefore, an authentic part of the document. This is an excellent collector's item for layman or lawyer. ...SOLD.... Antique Ephemera Legal Document 1788
This is a wonderful antique legal document from 8 October 1788. It was an exciting time. A new Constitution had been prepared, and in only two months the very first meeting of the Electoral College would vote unanimously to select George Washington as the first president under the new regime. Perhaps all that was too much for Thomas Treat of Glastonbury, Connecticut, who perhaps spent too much time with CNN and forgot to pay his bills. Or perhaps he was simply broke. Whatever the reason, it appears from the complaint that Treat had borrowed 15 shillings tuppence (about $1.20 in modern terms) in 1785 from one James Jones and never repaid him. Jones is now asking for two pounds in damages plus costs. The document is an order to the Sheriff of Hartford County, Connecticut to apprehend Treat and bring him before the Justice of the Peace at an appointed time. It was tough to owe someone a dollar in those days! The piece is in good condition. The edges are rough (it has been double matted to preserve the antique appearance this roughness provides), and there is one crumpled spot on the right edge. Fortunately, this is on a blank portion of the piece so no writing is affected. Overall size is approximately 8 ¾ inches wide by 10 ¾ inches high. The piece itself is approximately 8 ½ inches by 6 inches. ...SOLD.... This item has been SOLD and is no longer available for purchase. Antique Civil War Document for Package Express
Civil War Collectors-here is an antique document that reflects the daily life of the Civil War soldier. It is a receipt, dated 5 December 1862 in Middletown, Connecticut, and issued by the Adams Express Company's Army and Soldiers Package Express. The receipt is for shipment of one box from Middletown to Washington, DC. The interesting part of this old document is in the fine print. The company promises only to get the package to a convenient point near the destination where it will be turned over to third parties for delivery to the consignee or the "Quartermaster or other officer of the regiment to which the consignee is attached." Disclaimers of liability follow. War was close to home in those days. Still-where were UPS and Federal Express when you needed them? The piece is approximately 8 ¼ inches wide by 5 inches high. It has been framed for your enjoyment, and the overall dimensions are approximately 10 ¾ inches by 8 ¾. Condition is excellent with no chips or tears. There are creases, as the recipient obviously folded the receipt to put it in his pocket, just as we would today. This is a fine piece of Americana, taken from the darkest hour of the country's history. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6% state sales tax. Buyers outside the USA are responsible for any taxes, tariffs or customs that might apply.
