Alexander Roux Gothic carved walnut side chairs c1845
RARE pair of carved American Gothic Chairs c 1845 attributed to Alexander Roux. Roux was born in 1813 and died in 1886. He was a French-trained ébéniste, or cabinetmaker, who emigrated to the United States in the 1830s. He opened a shop in New York City in 1837. The business grew quickly: by the 1850s he employed 120 craftsmen in his shop and introduced then-new industrial technologies, such as steam-powered saws. Roux specialized in the ornate Rococo Revival style, but practiced many others. His work is highly sought by collectors, with larger and more complex pieces fetching large sums. One of his sideboards was featured in a 2000 exhibit at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each chair measures 42 inches high, 17 inches wide and deep, 17 and one half to the top of their original upholstered seats. Both are in very good condition. Notice the heart in the top crest. One chair has a small piece of the heart missing.Text information from Wikipedia.com Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6% state sales tax.
