18th C Chinese temple chest incorporating upper and lower compartments containing shelves and drawers. Upper cupboard doors are carved and gilded scenes. The lower doors are incised floral decorations of period vases. Warm reddish patina with bronze and brass hardware; supported by a carved stand with lion faces and paw feet. Antique Chinese figure of Guandi c1800 to 1850. This wood sculpture measures 45 and one half inches high overall. The figure measures 43 inches high and 24 inches wide by 14 inches deep. The base measures 2 and one half inches high by 20 and one quarters wide by 14 and one half inches deep. Excellent carving detail and wonderful old gilt patina. Guandi, or Guan Yu, was an intrepid military general and hero during China's Three Kingdoms period, about 1,700 years ago. He is remembered for his kind heart, loyalty and patriotism. D. 557-581 This is based on the columns and on the treatment of the curtain above which indicates western influences. The Northern Chou people were in close contact with the peoples of Central Asia.We have a letter dated October 17 1962 from John A Pope Director of the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution addressed to our consignor explaining he had talked to the then Leading authority on Chinese sculpture, Professor Osvald Siren about this piece.
