American Medical Botany books in 3 volumes by Jacob Bigelow M. D. c1817. The set contains sixty color plates comprising ten handcolored copper engravings and fifty plates printed in colors, probably from an etched stone, some finished by hand. Half title in second and third volumes. Contemporary three quarter maroon calf and marbled boards, gilt-lettered spines. Minor wear to extremities. Scattered foxing. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Blindstamps on titlepages and some plates. Plates also with some minor foxing. Overall very good. The first American book with color-printing, and also a foundation work in American botanical studies, notable for its fine plates. Bigelow, a native of Massachusetts, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he became keenly interested in botany as a student of Benjamin Smith Barton, then a professor of materia medica as well as the leading botanist in the United States. Following his graduation in 1810 he entered private practice in Boston, and himself became a professor of materia medica, at Harvard Medical School, in 1815.
