Ashanti Chieftains chair Ghana Africa
Ashanti Chieftain's chair of wood and stretched hide, with hammered brass tack and bell shape applied decorations. This 19th century chair from the Ghana, in western Africa, shows in its form the influence of the Portuguese traders who were actively trading in the region in the 17th century. These chairs in original condition are rarely found. The Ashanti tribe is the largest tribe in Ghana, and one of the few matrilineal societies in Africa. Ashanti kings retained figurehead status after colonization, and even today great pride in the Ashanti King lives on in the tradition of the golden stool. This chair is all original. Just a few tacks are missing, and one side rail is pushed in a bit from use. Measures 30 inches high, 16 inches wide, 17 inches deep. Shipping extra. African Mende Mask Sierra Leone c1930. This "African Mende Mask" measures 17 inches high and is 8 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Mende people of Sierra Leone are located in West Africa. They are cultivators and their main crop is rice. They also produce a large amount of palm oil. Mende population is estimated at 1 million. "Antique 18th century Hawaiian single board Poi Bowl" Antique Wooden Utensils. This "antique Hawaiian poi bowl "measures 34 and one quarter inches by 38 inches across the top. The handles measure 4 and one half inches out each and they are 5 and one half inches wide at the grip. This antique wooden bowl has a wonderful finish, which can be seen in the photographs. African art,"tribal mask". This is a wonderful African tribal mask from the Ivory Coast Senufu tribe. This African mask is called a firespitter. The patina on this mask is just perfect along with the original painted stripes on its antlers. This ceremonial mask has many features to its design, water buffalo horns, a bird, a native face and fearsome teeth. This mask is in wonderful condition with a small repair to the top back. PROVENANCE,This tribal mask was consigned to us by a professor of political science at an eastern ivy league university.
